The Mesoamerican people knew about their past because it had been preserved in their historical codices. Although they also recaled long-gone peoples and events in oral stories, songs and performances, the ancient mexicans relied principally on the painted books to keep the past firm. Some of these ashtonishing painted histories survived the Spanish invasion to provide an invaluable resource for the subsequent postconquest chroniclers. FCE presents a collection of the most important codices. They are all facsimile editions accompanied with the history and interporetation of the pictographical writing.
